  5. The field of chemotherapy is very active. The National Cancer  Institute (NCI) and the pharmaceutical industry are always searching for promising new chemotherapies.
  6.     Six to ten new drugs are introduced each year. Most
  7. are modifications of previously known drugs (analogues) 
  8. or new formulations of old drugs. A number of new
  9.  compounds also enter trial each year, but many are
  10. found early in their development to have problems
  11. or to share mechanisms of action or resistance with
  12. older compounds without possessing any obvious
  13.  advantages.
  14.     Before being approved by the Federal Drug
  15.  Administration (FDA) for the treatment of 
  16. cancer, a chemotherapeutic drug is tested by
